English has become the language of Science and Technology; that is why, a great number of professionals from different parts of the world have the necessity of learning this language. In addition, in Medicine field this is the most used language in international meetings as well as the main medium for medical textbooks, and journals (Maher 1986, quoted in Rogolj & Cizmic, 2012, p. 5). Consequently, the main objective of the present work is to design and implement an ESP course addressed to Oncology professionals from Mayor de San Andres University.
This type of course will benefit oncologists in having English knowledge and through this the accessibility to read scientific updated information, write research papers and interact with foreign colleagues as well as improving the knowledge about their field in order to provide medical care to their patients. Furthermore, this work will be very useful for those future ESP teachers and ESP courses since in Bolivia they demand a great effort from the teacher to research in the students´ specialized field, and develop materials for the course.
The content of this project is divided in seven Chapters. The first chapter describes the problem statement, objectives, and justification. The second one introduces to the institutional framework of Cell Biology Unit. Then, the third chapter shows the theoretical basis of this project. After that, forth chapter explains about the methodology used to conduct this work. Then, fifth chapter provides the data analysis and results. In addition, sixth chapter gives details about the ESP course proposal; for example, the type of syllabus, materials and methodology. Chapter seventh points out the results from the piloting period of the course carried out at Cell Biology unit from Mayor de San Andres University. Finally, chapter eighth describes the conclusions and recommendations that we were able to draw during the process of this work.
