The involvement of T cells in the course of a variety of infectious diseases has been demonstrated by several lines of evidence. Particularly concerning Chagas’ disease, it has been recently shown that CD4 – bearing T Iymphocytes are responsible for the anti-cardiac muscle autoreactivity occurring in the chronic phase of the affection (Hontebeyrie-Joskowicz, 1991; Ribeiro dos Santos et al., 1992), where CD8 + cells are involved in protective mechanisms (Tarleton 1991).
