Summary.
In the altitude resident, three essential characteristics can be seen in the cerebral circulation and metabolism.
Firstly, the fundamental “metabolic” parameters such as the pH of the CSF and the cerebral oxygen and glucose consumptions are the same as those at sea level. Up to an altitude of 4000 m (13 000 ft) there is no cerebral ischemia.
Secondly, the “haemodynamic” parameters are modified, the cerebral blood flow is lowered by 20% and the mean cerebral transit time is increased by 18%; there would not therefore seem to be anychange in the vascular cerebral bed volume. The comparison with results…
